Competition for Iraqi Resources

Special Commentary: Washington, September 22, 2003

If you've been following this set of commentaries, you know that it's about biology and "selfish genes." One of the things I've harped on is that the tribe doesn't care what happens to other tribes and will do anything it can get away with to get resources from anyone anywhere, the American tribe being no exception to that rule. And if you're looking for a perfect example, look no farther than yesterday's news from Iraq.

The Washington Post reported today that ownership of Iraqi companies, except for natural resources, will be opened up to foreigners, who will be able completely own businesses. And six foreign banks will be permitted to take over Iraqi banks for starters, with other foreign banks allowed to purchase 50 percent stakes in local Iraqi banks. Wow!!! And you thought they hated us before. You ain't seen nothing yet. The Shiites and Sunnis always thought we came to their country to fleece them, and now we prove it for them. With foreign interests free to completely own Iraqi businesses, and with Iraq poor and disorganized, what do we expect them to think? We're setting up a colonial economy, in the name of helping them, and they're not stupid enough to believe we have their best interests at heart. If we wanted to turn all of Iraq against us, we've found the way this time.
